Abstract:

The extracts of absolute ethyl alcohol from star anise (Illicium verum) powder were obtained by soxhlet extractor method, and effects of the extracts on repellency, contact toxicity and fumigation activity of brown planthopper (BPH) were detected. The results showed that the number of BPH chose to feed and lay eggs on rice treated with extracts of star anise decreased significantly compared with control rice(P<0.01), and the number of eggs on star anise extracts treated rice plants was only 36.11% of that of control rice, oviposition deterrent rate reach to 46.94%; the antifeeding rate ranged from 35.38%-66.78% in 48 h. Extracts of star anise showed not very strong fumigation activity to BPH, the mean corrected mortality rates at 24 h and 48 h were 9.62% and 13.98%, respectively. Probability value method was used to determine the contact toxicity of star anise extracts against brown planthopper nymphs, the half lethal concentrations (LC50) were 7.04 and 4.69 mg·mL-1. It was showed that there are some active substances in star anise for behavior regulation and insecticidal activity of BPH, which has potential value for the prevention and control of BPH in field.
